Donkey Bay Inn

find us

Donkey Bay Inn commands wide-ocean views from a gated, private peninsula on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, a short walk from the centre of the historic township of Russell. Designed by maritime architect, Gary Underwood, its ecologically responsible form sits in total sympathy and harmony with its environment.

The estate produces all its own electricity and is a peaceful, safe sanctuary for those wanting to escape the wider world. There are two extraordinary sandy beaches within easy walking distance, one of which is a naturist beach.

Regular scheduled flights connect Bay of Islands airport (40 minutes’ drive) with New Zealand’s network of domestic and international airports. Auckland International Airport is approximately 50 minutes' flying time away. A helicopter flight from our helipad is one hour to Auckland International Airport.

Please note that, if driving, GPS should be set to use the vehicle ferry that departs continuously until 10pm daily from Beechy Street, Opua. This is the most expeditious route. However, we can advise on other scenic alternatives.
